Lightbulb Trout feeding zone

How do you recognize from the surface the place where the trouts go feeding? Are there visible signs to look for? Is it more likely near the shore?

Sometimes you can see fish periodically coming to the surface to eat insects, but you have to sit a while and wait to see enough of this activity to decide if you think a particular area is good. In my experience, I've made more catches not too close to shore, but not out in the middle, either.

I've had the best luck on the bottom of the water (bottom of the river). I believe that trout eat more insects on the bottom of the water, not on the top. It's hard to find the feeding areas. It's basically trial and error for me a lot of time.
