Default Sport, Hobby, or Art Form?

Which category do you think fly fishing falls under, or do you feel it is something else, or a combination oof two or all three of these things? I can see the arguments for all, honestly.

I kinda think it is a combination of all the three. It is a sport as you need to cast, pull out and land the fish. Casting and fly tying is an art to some extent. And it is obviously a hobby.

I think if I were to pick just one, I would say that it is an art form. It is all about the art--- what you are selecting, how you are casting, etc.

For me, it is a hobby that would stay with me for a lifetime. It is worth all the pleasure and the time I spend doing it.

But I feel as if some would argue against tying being an art - because if you get too creative, the knot might not work, and art is supposed to be about creativity and expression. It's more of a science, I think.

I can see plenty of expression in casting, though

For me, it's always been more of an art form than anything else. There's the beauty in a perfectly looped cast and then landing the fly just ever so gently so it appears as if a real insect just landed on the water.

Yes, casting is undoubtedly an art; Skipper explained it very well. Fly tying is also an art. The art is not just about being creative. You need also to express something properly and proportionately.
