Lightbulb Current

Is is advisable to know which way the current is flowing and how do you determine which way to fish with regards to the flow of the current? Do you go with it or against it?

I don't worry so much about going with or against the current, but I do like to fish in or near the current because it tends to stir up baitfish and get trout feeding in that area.

When I'm standing in a stream, I'll cast upstream (against the current) and allow the fly to ride the current and hopefully catch a fish. If nothing happens, I let the fly drift by me and then I retrieve it and cast again.
