Default Caught and released trout

While we are advised to use barbless hooks in catch and release fishing, I read that some fishers still stick to barbed hooks. What will happen to trout caught using barbed hooks and released? I think they will be severely injured. Do you think they will survive?

I think many fishers stick to barbed hooks out of habit and fear that the barbless hooks might cause them to lose some catches. I've seen fish that had obviously been caught and released, and while many survive, I can imagine that a few might suffer enough damage to make survival difficult.

There can be enough damage that survival would be difficult. I don't know what happens to the majority but I would rather not damage them if I am going to release them. But some stick to the old ways and don't want to change.

That's a shame. Yes, I would think there would be quite a bit of damage to those tender mouths. If there is too much damage you KNOW they won't survive but some won't be bothered to change.

I quite agree. The more a fish is damaged, the more likely it is to die when it is released back to the stream. Trout are becoming scarce enough without us helping the problem along.

That's why I start using barbless hooks now especially when I do fly fishing. It's not so difficult as many said. Just get used to it and learn the technique and you won't lose your catches anymore.
