Default Strike Indicator Floats

As a newbie to fly fishing but an amateur spinner, I'm surprised to see fly fishing floats used as strike indicators...surely that's spinning and not fly fishing?

Spinning uses the float as part of the rig but traditional fly setups don't, is this new piece of tackle to help novice fly fishing anglers?

Floats in fly fishing are used only when you want a sinking fly, this normally happens with nymph fly fishing and wet fly fishing. There is no use of floats if your fly is already floating right?

What do you use as floats in your fly fishing? I like to use crystal floats because it doesn't distract the fish from my fly.
