Default Walking stick

How many of you carry some kind of walking stick when you are walking through a river? Safety is one of the key things a fisherman must consider and a walking stick in rough currents comes in handy.

That gives me some thought about safety, but how do you carry a rod and a walking stick when you are wading and fishing?

I've seen some walking sticks that come with something that allows you to carry it when you're not using them. There might even be some retractible ones that you can tuck them away when you are fishing.

I have only used them when on hikes with the family as sometimes the rowdy folks like to take the harder path traveled. Never thought about this for fishing, I guess I am a safe fisher who does not take on anything too dangerous.

I don't carry one when I'm in the river. We carry sticks around when we hike but not when we fish. I think it would be more of a pain than a safety net for me.

I mostly stay in the same general spot when I fish, and so having a walking stick isn't really necessary. Do you move around a lot Skipper, when you fish? I tend to sit in the same spot for quite some time.

I have never used a walking stick when fishing either. When I do mountain climbing, yes I mostly use it, but not in the river. I am afraid I will confuse it with the rod; when a trout surfaces, I am hurriedly cast the stick instead of the rod.
