Default Fly patterns for Steelheads

I've always fished for brown and rainbow trout but never really tried my luck at steelhead trout. When I do go out for the big fish, what fly patterns would you suggest?

What I would do is go to the local fly shop and see if they have a collection of patterns to meet your needs. Keep several patterns handy so you can switch off and see what works and what doesn't.

The egg pattern fly is excellent for beginning steelhead fishing. Its hook is heavy enough to sink quickly and it's effective in all types of water.

I've been told it is nearly impossible to catch a steelhead trout with a fly? I personally have not tried yet but I want to.
Can you explain what the egg pattern is?

The egg patter, Mike, is designed to look like a fish egg. Think about salmon eggs that you see in the bait section of fishing stores.

Thanks for the tips. I came across a suggestion about adding a egg pattern to the head of a leech pattern. I may give that a try to see how it works out.

Egg paterns are just that - EGGS, dead easy to tie using the right materials, hell I have even tied them up using deer hair!

My favourite for Steelhead is the Coal Car, deadly!
