Practice casting indoors
If you don't have time to go outdoors to practice, a simple trick that I learned was to use a 3 foot wooden dowel (medium size) and about 15 feet of yarn. Tie the yard to the end of the dowel and you have a set up for indoor casting. Ta-dah!

That seems like a decent idea and I am happy to see that you are not trying to use hooks in the house. It is bad enough with me outside when I am 6' tall and there is limited room when fishing with others in random spots (that most times seem to be near a shore edge and tons of trees).

I think that is a great way to teach kids to cast. I don't know how many times my daughter caught me with her hook or caught herself. She would catch the back of her coat! I would say this is an awesome tip for younger anglers.

When I was learning how to cast, I used to do this a lot. Just for fun, I would try sneak up behind my wife and try to land the yarn on her head. Hahaha

That is a good idea for a beginner like me. But how can I practice casting for windy days? Should I use an electric fan to imitate the wind?

I love this idea. I can just see it now. When the weather is just horrible for fishing, fly fishermen will be inside with their practice rod and yarn trying to land the yard on the spouse, kids, lamps, etc. :D

Now that is a great idea. I'll have to give it a try when I go home. Always wanted to do something casting related indoors but my wife would kill me if I pulled out the rod. LOL

That's a great idea, Skipper, except about landing the yarn on your wife's head LOL. You don't need to do it indoors only. You can try it in the back yard or front yard actually.

When the weather is nice and I just want to practice my casting, I go to the school next to my house. It has a huge open field and allows me to practice my technique. But for inside practice, this is a great idea.

I love the idea of turning on a fan to get the windy feel of it. That is brilliant. I think moving to the front yard or back yard is a great idea too.

Now this is great advice for people trying to learn how to cast. I'm still learning new styles of casting. I never thought about using yarn in the house. Great tip!

It is very basic that constant practice open doors to perfection. However practicing indoors can have its advatages and disadvantages. More on the latter I would say.

For me the best way to practice is on the yard. This way you can have full simulation of everything that goes with trouting. Best gimme is, I have a small pond.

My neighbor and I always does this thing of practicing indoors. This way we still get the feel of casting the right way and hitting intended target with ease.
