Default The Damsel Nymph - September 2009 Fly of the Month

A popular fly amongst floating line anglers, the damsel nymph is one that I've seen many junior and experience fly fishing enthusiasts cast out over the years.

What is your experience with this fly? Is it one you carry for all occasions?

Default Damsel in distress?

The damsel nymph is one of my favourite flies. I would however impart this little gem to you - in nature the nymph changes colour as it grows!
The just hatched from the egg creature is transparent and about 2mm long
The next stage sees this beautiful nymph turn a straw yellow colour and can be found in their hundreds around rotting weed beds about December time and will be about 8 - 10 mm long.
As spring arrives the damsel nymph will be an olive to brown colour about 15 - 18 mm long, and much depeleted in numbers as the trout will have over-wintered on them.
Early summer sees them turn very dark almost black as they prepare to turn into the adult fly, usually between 20 - 30 mm long and a lovely morsel for the trout.
This is a condensed time line as some species actually stay as nymphs for more than 12 months!
Match the colour to the size when you tie / fish your own and you will be on a winner.
