Lightbulb Which way to go with the line?

With a weighted hook deep under water, what do you do when you feel a bend on the pole? Do you slack the line or reel it in fast?

I slack it at first so that I can better judge whether it's an actual catch, and once I'm sure, I start reeling. Often I'll have to reel in anyway because I want to make sure my bait is still there.

I'll leave it alone for a few seconds just to see what happens. If it twitches like there is a fish on the other end, I'll set the hook and start reeling.

If I see the pole bend, I'll leave it alone and just watch to see what happens. If the line and pole continue to move, I'll hook the fish (at least I hope that's what it is) and reel it in.
