Default How far do you cast?

When fishing from the shoreline of a lake, how far from the shore do you normally cast? I try to get about a halfway to the center of the lake when I'm at smaller ones, if I can.

It depends on the depth of the water on the shoreline. I usually choose a spot where the water is deeper so I don't have to cast too far.

It really depends on the lake. Each lake has different depths at different places. I try to know the geography of the lake I fish before deciding where I'm casting.

It seems like the consensus is that it varies by lake-- so to toss out a follow up question that I'm curious about, what are your techniques, once you know the geography of the said lake?
