Default How is the proper technique for using barbless hooks?

Recently I started using barbless hooks more as advised, especially when I do catch and release fishing. I read that with the proper technique, you can use barbless hooks without losing too many fish. I wonder how is the proper technique? Is it something you have to find yourself?

In all of the years that I've used barbless hooks, I've never really had to change my technique. When I feel the fish bite, I set the hook and keep the rod tip up and land the fish.

What about in catch and release fishing, where you should not pull out and land the fish? In catch and release fishing, it's better to release the fish without removing it from water. But I don't want to lose it; I want to catch and release it.
