Default Best "Fake" Baits

I don't like calling it "fake," because hey, it does catch fish, so it must be bait, but if you're not going to use live bait for trout fishing, what do you think is the best thing to use? I knew a guy who always used sharp cheddar cheese - and it worked well!

I've heard about people using cheese and corn to catch trout. Never tried it myself. I tend to stick with the traditional stuff like worms.

Wow. I haven't ever heard of anybody using cheese or corn-- how would that work? That's absolutely incredible. I like to use the normal sort of bait as well.

For whatever reason, fish are drawn to corn. Never researched the reason - I just know what works. Corn can be relatively cheap bait when you can buy it on sale. The best part is, if you don't catch fish, you can still eat corn.

I've tried the cheese thing myself, and it does work. I like to think that the color and maybe the scent of it are attractive to the fish; I just take a block of cheddar cheese, break of a small piece, hook it and fish!

@ Fisherswife - what kind of cheese are you using and how big of a piece are you using? I'd like to give it a try but I might end up eating the cheese because I'm a big cheese lover. LOL

Wow, it's amazing that fish like cheese and corn; they have never told me about that LOL. How do you put corn on the hook?
@ Fisherwife: Do trout prefer a particular brand than other brands? What brand is it? (I mean it. )

Thanks for the info guys. The only bait I know so far are worms and cricket. Does using cheese get you better result? If so, I must give it a try. It is often easier to get cheese than to get worms.
